Emotional regulation is a critical skill for navigating ADHD-related challenges, yet it is often overlooked in traditional ADHD coaching. This session presents emotional awareness as a foundational tool for managing ADHD, enriched by contemplative practices such as mindfulness and self-compassion. Participants will explore how emotions influence behavior and discover practical strategies for cultivating emotional literacy, awareness, and self-regulation. Through guided exercises, attendees will leave with a toolbox of everyday options for cognitive reappraisal and responding more effectively to procrastination, distraction, and stress. These simple strategies will ultimately improve decision-making, meta-cognition, and overall health and well-being.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the Origins and Functions of Emotions – Participants will be able to explain what emotions are, where they come from, and how they influence cognition and behavior from both a neurobiological and psychological perspective
- Recognize the Role of Emotional Regulation and DESR in ADHD – Attendees will learn how emotional regulation relates to executive function, define Deficient Emotional Self-Regulation (DESR), and explore its impact on impulse control, working memory, and long-term goal-directed behavior
- Integrate Contemplative Practices for Emotional Self-Regulation – Participants will compare western psychological approaches with eastern contemplative traditions in the context of mind training and practice mindfulness-based strategies to enhance emotional and self-regulation in daily life
