Dr. Lenz will discuss the critical connections between Chronic Pain Syndromes, also described as invisible illnesses, because exam findings, lab results, and imaging reveal normal findings compared to the high pain and fatigue levels. The traditional biomedical system excludes those living with these conditions from effective care because a multifaceted, holistic approach involving the biopsychosocial, spiritual, and environmental approach is needed. These overlapping pain Syndromes are now called nociplastic pain conditions. Nociplastic pain, previously known as centralized pain, involves a difference in how the central nervous system processes pain stimuli. This differs from nociceptive pain, caused by tissue damage, and neuropathic pain, pain from an injury to a peripheral nerve, such as diabetic neuropathy or a herniated disc. The core symptoms of nociplastic pain syndromes are pain, fatigue, insomnia, and cognitive difficulties known as brain fog which mirror the symptoms of ADHD.
Studies have shown that many struggling with these illnesses have comorbid ADHD and or autism but have never been diagnosed or treated. Treatment has been shown to not only help ADHD symptoms but to lessen the suffering from these symptoms and remove barriers to a holistic lifestyle medicine approach.
